SHPB is widely used to determine the mechanical properties of a large variety of material types at different dynamic loading rates. This aids materials selection and identifies how material strength is affected by the nature of the loads imposed - a slowly-applied load may cause a component to stretch, but a sudden shock can cause it to crack instead. Knowledge of this is vital for correct use of materials in the intended application and operating environments.
